EDIT – NEXA’s social media handle has now revealed which is the “SUV For Adventure” and it isn’t the Jimny but the S-Cross. The S-Cross is already on sale via NEXA and this was just a social media marketing campaign for it. I guess the wait for the Jimny continues. Monday morning blues, eh?
Maruti Suzuki has teased an upcoming car on the social media handle of NEXA. The caption reads, “This just in! A wild adventurous ride has been spotted making its way through different terrains! The one question is, what car is this?”
There is a high possibility that this teaser is meant for the Maruti Jimny. The Jimny was launched globally a couple of years back and it has become super popular. In fact, the waiting period in some countries can give some tough competition to the Mahindra Thar’s waiting period here in India!
The automaker has been developing a 5-door version of the Jimny but this is still some time away, and won’t be introduced before 2022. However, looking at the success of the Thar, we think Maruti will first launch the 3-door version here, since it is anyway manufactured in India.
The Maruti Jimny will come with the same engine that powers the S-Cross, Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6 and Vitara Brezza. This is a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 105 PS of power and gets either a 5-speed MT or 4-speed AT. The compact SUV also gets an ALLGRIP 4WD system.
We really hope the teaser is actually for the Jimny though. It could just be the new Grand Vitara too. It was even suggested by someone that this could be a limited edition of one of Maruti’s existing crossovers/compact SUVs but we’d be happy to be proven wrong here!
If Maruti does end up launching the 3-door Jimny, expect the pricing to be lower than the Thar by a couple of lakhs. The Jimny is smaller in size and it comes with all the basic features that you’d need in a vehicle these days. A starting price of Rs. 8.99 lakhs (ex-showroom) would be sweet, no? Being a niche product, the vehicle will be available through Maruti’s NEXA chain of dealerships.
