Maruti Jimny Steering Vibration Issue Addressed With Service Bulletin

Maruti-Jimny-Long-Term-3

Maruti Jimny brake components will be replaced by the carmaker free of cost

Maruti Suzuki has issued a service bulletin to address a steering vibration issue in the Jimny, which has been observed at speeds ranging between 60 km/hr and 80 km/hr. This action involves replacing key brake components free of cost for affected vehicles, ensuring a smoother driving experience for owners.

Nature of the Issue

Several Jimny owners have reported noticeable steering vibration or wobble, often referred to as the “death wobble” within the owners’ community. The problem typically arises when braking at speeds around 80 km/hr and diminishes once the speed drops below 60 km/hr. While the issue has been prominent in vehicles with odometer readings below 5000 km, it has also been noted in a few higher-mileage units. Not all Jimny owners have experienced the problem, including those with vehicles driven extensively but it has become common enough for Maruti to intervene.

Maruti’s Service Bulletin and Resolution

Acknowledging the problem, Maruti has initiated a silent service campaign wherein affected Jimny owners are individually contacted for rectification. The company’s Nexa service outlets are replacing key brake components, specifically the king pin assembly and the front brake discs. These replacements are being performed under warranty and at no cost to the owners.

The root cause of the issue is believed to be premature disc wear due to a faulty king pin assembly. To address this, Maruti’s service process involves the following steps:

  1. Testing for the Vibration: Affected vehicles are tested for the steering wobble, with video documentation as proof.
  2. Component Replacement: If the problem is verified, the king pin assembly is replaced. The front brake discs are also inspected for wear and replaced if necessary.

Maruti has clarified that the replacements are limited to Jimny units running on stock tyres, as modifications could impact the vehicle’s handling and potentially exacerbate the issue.

Cost Implications and Customer Support

While the estimated cost of replacing the king pin assembly is approximately Rs. 2020/-, and the front brake discs cost around Rs. 4400/-, Maruti is absorbing the expense entirely under warranty. This proactive approach highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining the Jimny’s reliability and addressing customer concerns promptly.

Impacted Owners and Resolution Timeline

Service centres have already begun implementing the corrective measures, and the process is being carried out quietly to ensure minimal disruption to customers. Owners are encouraged to report the issue promptly and take their vehicles to Nexa service outlets for inspection.

Maruti Suzuki’s response to the problem reflects a balance of acknowledging a technical flaw while prioritising customer satisfaction. By addressing the issue comprehensively and free of cost, the company aims to uphold the Jimny’s reputation as a capable and reliable off-roader in the Indian market.
