Maruti e Vitara to debut at 2025 Auto Expo
Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the first look of its upcoming e Vitara electric SUV, marking its entry into India’s fast-growing EV market. The vehicle is set to debut at the Auto Expo 2025, also known as the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, on 17th January in New Delhi. This marks a significant milestone as Maruti Suzuki ventures into the electric vehicle segment, jointly developing the model with Toyota.
Key Highlights of the Maruti e Vitara:
- 5-seater electric SUV with two battery options.
- Jointly developed with Toyota on a dedicated skateboard platform.
- Expected launch in India by March 2025, followed by Europe in June.
- Aimed at competing with Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv, Mahindra BE 6 and MG ZS EV.
From Concept to Production
Previously showcased as the eVX concept, the production version of the e Vitara retains much of the original design language, albeit with some refinements. While the concept featured sharper edges, the production model adopts more rounded contours for a practical yet modern aesthetic.
The e Vitara (internally codenamed: YY8) will be manufactured in India and exported to multiple international markets. Toyota’s counterpart to the e Vitara, the Urban Cruiser EV, will also be produced locally, further underscoring the collaboration between the two automotive giants.
Technical Specifications
The e Vitara will be available with two battery pack options:
- 49kWh for the entry-level variants.
- 61kWh for higher trims, expected to include an AllGrip-e AWD system for enhanced performance.
This setup positions the e Vitara as a versatile option catering to both urban and adventure-oriented buyers.
Market Positioning and Competition
Maruti Suzuki is targeting a competitive segment with the e Vitara. The SUV will square off against other upcoming electric models, including the Hyundai Creta EV—also debuting on 17th January – alongside established players like the MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv and Mahindra BE 6.
Sales and Infrastructure Plans
The e Vitara will be sold through Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa premium outlets, aligning with the brand’s strategy of elevating its EV offerings. Additionally, the company has hinted at plans to establish a robust charging infrastructure across the country. This initiative will include installing EV chargers at its sales and service outlets, making EV ownership more accessible to customers.
Launch Timeline
The e Vitara is set to hit Indian roads by March 2025, with bookings, pricing and delivery details expected closer to its debut. Its European launch is planned for June 2025, signalling Maruti Suzuki’s ambitions for a global presence in the EV segment.
The Maruti e Vitara represents a pivotal step in the company’s journey toward electrification. By combining an accessible price point with advanced features and infrastructure support, Maruti Suzuki aims to carve out a strong position in the burgeoning EV market. The upcoming Auto Expo will provide a clearer picture of how this model aligns with the evolving preferences of Indian consumers.
