Maruti Suzuki could be launching the Ciaz sedan (pronounced as Chi-aaz) that will be replacing the SX4 in the C-segment space in July itself this year. When the Ciaz concept was unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo last month, the company had conveyed that the sedan would be launched by the end of this year, during the festive season. Initially, Maruti Suzuki could launch only the diesel version of the Ciaz sedan available with the 1.3-litre Multijet engine (DDiS in Maruti speak) with 90 PS of power on tap.
This engine is currently available on the outgoing SX4 as well. The sedan will also get an automatic transmission which will be a CVT unit as opposed to the automated manual transmission (AMT) unit speculated earlier. The report also suggests that the dimensions will be similar to the concept vehicle showcased at the Auto Expo. The petrol version on the other hand could be launched in the third quarter of the year.
The production version of the Ciaz sedan is expected to have a more spacious cabin along with a host of new features and gadgetry. The petrol version is most likely to be powered by the 1.4-litre K-Series petrol motor in a higher state of tune, mated to a 5-speed manual or a CVT gearbox. The recent success of the all-new Honda City could be a compelling reason why Maruti may want to venture into the market earlier than scheduled. While the reports are still unconfirmed, we will keep you posted on Maruti Suzuki’s plans with the Ciaz sedan.
The current Maruti Suzuki SX4 has been doing dismal numbers compared to competition. So it does not make sense to continue selling the product, especially if the Ciaz is ready for launch. With competition from the likes of Hyundai Verna, fourth generation Honda City and Volkswagen Vento, Maruti may not want to be left behind.
