Maruti Celerio Diesel Specs Revealed; Highest Mileage In India

2014 Maruti Celerio Exterior Review

Maruti will be launching diesel variants of the Celerio soon. The vehicle will turn out to be very fuel efficient and an instant hit with buyers.

The 793cc 2-cyl engine gives out 27.62 km/l of mileage

The Maruti Celerio is a nice hatchback that has gained a lot of popularity in the mass-market segment where it is positioned. In the beginning, Maruti launched only petrol and AMT variants of the vehicle and then later went on to launch CNG variants too. Now, the Indian auto giant will soon launch diesel variants of the compact hatchback. The Maruti Celerio diesel is likely to be launched in the first week of June. The vehicle will produce an ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency of 27.62 km/l which is the highest official mileage figure in the country.

The Maruti Celerio diesel is powered by a tiny 793cc two-cylinder engine churning out 47 PS of power at 3500 RPM and 127 Nm of torque at 2000 RPM. Unlike other Maruti diesel cars that come with DDiS badging, the Celerio will actually make use of DDiS125 badging where 125 indicates the peak torque value of the car. The diesel variants won’t be offered with the AMT gearbox anytime soon. If Maruti does launch the Celerio diesel with AMT some time in the future, then it might just be the cheapest diesel automatic vehicle in the country.

The Celerio diesel will be competing with the Chevrolet Beat and Hyundai Grand i10. Both of these rivals come with three-cylinder engines and produce significantly higher torque figures. There is a high probability that the Celerio diesel will feel underpowered when compared to competition but then again, most people will still opt for the car owing to its high fuel efficiency and of course the Maruti badge. The Celerio is priced between Rs. 4.72-5.96 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai) for the petrol variants so we expect the diesel variants to be pricier by Rs. 50,000/-.
