It took 15 years and 6 months for the Maruti Alto to achieve a milestone of selling 30 lakh units which no other Indian car has achieved yet.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto was launched in September 2000 and has been the best-selling Indian car since the past 10 years. The entry-level hatchback has sold record-breaking 30 lakh units and a record for other Indian cars was established. It took 15 years and 6 months to reach the milestone.
Other than these 30 lakh units, 3.8 lakh units of the Maruti Alto have been exported to over 70 countries that include Srilanka, Chile, Netherlands, UK, Algeria, etc. It is currently offered in two variants, namely Alto 800 and Alto K10 with an option of CNG powered engine while an Auto Gear Shift (AGS) transmission is also offered as an option.
Maruti Suzuki has given a number of updates to the Alto over the years to keep it up-to-date. It is the only car in the segment that offers dual front airbags and ABS as an option across all the variants. The main competitors in the segment are the Hyundai Eon and the newly launched Renault Kwid.
The Maruti Alto K10 is powered by a 998cc engine that produces 68 PS on petrol and 59 PS on CNG at 6000 RPM and 90 Nm on petrol and 78 Nm of torque on CNG at 3500 RPM while the Alto 800 is powered by a 796cc engine producing 48 PS at 6000 RPM and 69 Nm of torque at 3500 RPM. Both the motors are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and an AGS version is also offered with the K10.
