Maruti Across Spied With 1.6L Diesel Engine In India

The Maruti Suzuki Across has been spied testing for the first time with the new Fiat sourced 1.6-litre DDiS diesel engine in a production ready model.

Maruti Suzuki has thankfully decided to give the Across a more powerful diesel engine

Maruti Suzuki is aiming to build a more premium brand image in the minds of Indian car buyers and will even set up separate showrooms for its premium offerings. One such premium offering is the S-Cross, that has been renamed as the Across for India. The Indian auto giant will be launching the Across compact SUV towards the end of May 2015. MotorBeam was the first to bring you the news that the new Across will be launched with a 1.6-litre diesel engine option under the hood as well.

In line with this, the 1.6-litre diesel Maruti Across has been recently spied testing in production ready avatar. From the spy shots, one can notice that the vehicle is carrying the ‘S-Cross’ moniker, which means that the particular model is for the export market only. Another feature that points to the same direction is the fact that there is no chrome present on the tailgate of the car, which will not be the case for the India specific model. So, the fact that Maruti Suzuki will be offering the Across with a more powerful diesel engine as an additional option to the same old 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine, comes as welcome news to enthusiasts.

To summarise all the engine options once again, the Maruti Across will be available with a 1.4-litre K-Series petrol engine which offers 92 PS of power, a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine that churns out 90 PS of power and a 1.6-litre, Fiat sourced DDiS diesel engine producing 122 PS of power, that is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The Maruti Across is expected to be priced from Rs. 8.95 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base petrol version. Prices will go all the way up to Rs. 13 lakhs for the range-topping 1.6-litre diesel AWD version. The model will be available in L, V, Z and Z+ variants with the Z+ getting projector lamps as standard. Now that the Ciaz has got off to a decent start in the market, Maruti is looking to replicate the same with the new Across, as it competes against the Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and the upcoming Hyundai ix25.
