Maruti To Reintroduce 1.6-Litre Diesel Engine In BS6 Avatar

Maruti XL6 Launch

Maruti is considering to get back the 1.6-litre diesel engine with BS6 compliance.

The S-Cross has been spied testing with 1.6-litre MJD in India

The 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine sourced from Fiat is a very popular engine that was being used by multiple carmakers at one point of time. Enthusiasts back then were keen to sample the higher capacity version of it, the 1.6-litre diesel, which Maruti eventually introduced for the first time in the S-Cross.

The higher taxes and low demand of the S-Cross 1.6 resulted in the axing of the higher capacity oil burner. The Maruti S-Cross facelift was only launched with a 1.3-litre diesel engine.

Maruti Suzuki is now likely to bring back the Fiat sourced 1.6-litre diesel engine next year. The oil burner will be BS6 compliant and is expected to power the Maruti XL6, Maruti S-Cross and the upcoming Vitara. The S-Cross facelift has already been spotted testing with 1.6-litre BS6 diesel.

The 1.6-litre diesel in its BS4 compliance had a power output of 120 PS with 320 Nm of torque. It was available with a 6-speed manual transmission. We expect the specifications to be more or less the same with BS6 compliance.

Meanwhile the 1.3-litre diesel engine will be axed completely after the emission norms kick in as it cannot be upgraded to comply with BS6. Hence, other small cars in the Maruti stable currently running on 1.3-litre diesel will get a 1.5-litre petrol engine option while the premium cars will get 1.6-litre BS6 diesel engine option along with the 1.5-litre petrol.
