Mahindra has finally discontinued the XUV500

The Mahindra XUV500 has been, as expected, discontinued after staying in the market for 10 long years.

It was only a matter of time that Mahindra took it upon itself to let go of one of its prime models, since it had readied the XUV500’s successor, the XUV700.

Having unveiled the XUV700 in August, Mahindra recently opened bookings for the car and subsequently, deliveries of petrol variants have commenced too.

With the new SUV taking up all the headlines and grabbing all the eyeballs, the old horse was non-existent in the minds of customers. In September this year, only 160 people took it home.

Well, as the saying goes, there cannot be 2 swords in 1 sheath

Launched in 2011, the SUV which could seat up to 7 people, received 2 major updates over the years and was last offered with a 2.2-litre diesel engine (good for 153 BHP and 360 Nm of peak torque) teamed to either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

Packed to the rafters with features, the discontinued Mahindra XUV500 was offered in 4 manual variants (W5, W7, W9 and W11(O)) and 3 automatic variants (W7, W9 and W11(O)).

It rivalled the likes of Tata Harrier, Safari, MG Hector and the like. The XUV700 does that job now. But, the XUV500 moniker will not die and will be used for a new car that is likely to be launched in 3 years’ time.

To be based on a version of the SsangYong Tivoli’s platform, the second-generation Mahindra XUV500 will measure about 4300 mm and sit below the XUV700.
