Mahindra is still undecided about the business potential of the XUV Aero Coupe. The company says that it will take at least two years for the car to hit Indian roads after the green signal.
Indian automotive major Mahindra has a penchant for adopting adventurous designs for its cars and treading down the unbeaten path to come out with ground-breaking products. One such vehicle which excited the public at the 2016 Auto Expo was the XUV Aero Coupe concept which, due to its sloping roof-line and suicide doors, was the main attraction of the automaker’s pavilion. Now the company has said that they are taking a hard look at the business potential of the vehicle and might launch it if they find the venture profitable, but nothing has been decided as of yet.
The XUV Aero Coupe concept was unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo with people giving a resounding thumbs-up to the design and style of the vehicle. There were initial reports that Mahindra might put the vehicle in production, but the company remained tight lipped about the future of the vehicle. Mahindra has now said that they have already done some initial engineering work but have not finalised anything about its business viability. If after the number crunching is over and the car is given a green signal, it will at least take two years for the vehicle to hit production floors.
It is imperative of Mahindra to be apprehensive about the launch of such a niche and premium vehicle in a price-conscious market like India. The company fears that people will not shell out big-money for a price-heavy product from a local manufacturer and thus the low volumes will not justify the required investment. The XUV Aero Coupe, if launched, will be definitely positioned above the existing XUV500 SUV, which already costs more than Rs. 15 lakhs.
The XUV Aero Coupe was a fabulous looking vehicle presented by the company which was built by the Mahindra Group-owned Italian design firm Pininfarina and styled in-house by the carmaker. Mahindra claims the XUV Aero Coupe can do the 0-60 km/hr sprint in less than 6 seconds, thanks to its all-new 210 BHP mHawk engine. The car featured unique suicide doors (which might get axed in the production version) and coupe-SUV roof-line along with fancy LED lights. The concept is also a demonstrator for Mahindra’s new infotainment and connectivity systems that will feature on future production models.
