Mahindra-Ford joint venture is coming up with a range of SUVs very soon. First up will be the new gen XUV500 and its Ford counterpart early next year. It will be followed by Mahindra XUV400 launch in the second half of 2021 along with Ford B-SUV.
Yes, it might be called XUV400 as the nomenclature has been filed for trademark. Secondly, the SUV will be positioned between the XUV300 and XUV500 and hence the perfect name to fit the portfolio. It is codenamed as Mahindra S204.
Ford’s version of the SUV is codenamed B745. Both the cars are based on the same platform with a length of 4.3-metres. However, they won’t share any styling elements, both carmakers will give their signature design DNA on their respective SUVs.
These SUVs will get monocoque construction. They can be had with either front wheel drive layout or all-wheel drive system depending on the variants.
Powering the duo will be Mahindra’s G15 mStallion 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. This direct-injection unit is capable of producing 163 HP. Moreover, they will offer a BS6 compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine too.
With these two new SUVs being prepared for launch next year, Ford and Mahindra will enter the battle against Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta. It will be a crowded segment all of a sudden.
Meanwhile, the Ford EcoSport will also benefit with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol mStallion engine from Mahindra. It will be introduced in early 2021 to replace the EcoSport’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost, which is now discontinued.
