Mahindra XUV300 electric launch planned for 2023.
Mahindra showcased the XUV300 electric version dubbed as eXUV300 at the 2020 Auto Expo but they didn’t announce the launch plans of the car. It was a concept version previewing the compact SUV in its environment friendly avatar.
It had a futuristic set of headlamps, no grille at all, sci-fi inspired alloys, no ORVMs and a sleek rear profile with lots of blue colour embellishments across the body.
While we were expecting Mahindra to introduce the eXUV300 sometime in 2021, the carmaker has some other plans for their EV portfolio.
Mahindra believes the personal EV space will take 2-3 years to pick up as the market is not ready for EVs currently. They do not see any numbers coming out of the recent hype of EVs.
Currently the Indian carmaker plans to focus on the commercial EV space with their 3-wheelers and small 4-wheelers. Even the upcoming eKUV100 will focus more towards the fleet segment.
In 2023, Mahindra plans to launch a range of products in the personal EV space and the first product to be launched will be the eXUV300. Some of the EVs will include ICE-derived models while some will be born-electric.
Tata is currently offering two EVs in the personal space including Nexon and Tigor EV. There is Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV on offer in the midfield. The luxury segment of EVs currently include Mercedes EQS, Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace. Tesla is about to introduce their products in India but the timeline is uncertain.
