The Mahindra Quanto gets equipped with an automated manual transmission (AMT) to make driving easy and cost effective with the launch scheduled by late 2014.
Mahindra had first showcased the Quanto AMT at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year. With the AMT gearbox still being a novelty back then, the Quanto AMT received a positive response and the company has now stated that the compact SUV will be launched by the end of the year. With the Quanto being one of the few duds by Mahindra in recent times, the AMT is the automaker’s second attempt to improve sales of the compact SUV. Tagged as ‘autoSHIFT’ by Mahindra, the AMT unit has been developed in collaboration between Mahindra and Ricardo.
The Mahindra Quanto features a new 5-speed automated manual transmission that offers a hassle free driving experience and improved fuel economy. The autoSHIFT incorporates some new advanced technologies like the advanced electronic control and hydraulic actuation system that senses the demand of power and selects the gear accordingly. The AMT is very similar to the one found on the Maruti Celerio and will be marginally more expensive than regular Quanto variants.
Apart from the new AMT gearbox, Mahindra has also made changes to the Quanto with updates to the exterior and interior design and has added new features as well. There will also be new equipment included on the compact SUV, while the company is also said to have updated the suspension set-up for improved ride quality. Other things remain the same and the Quanto continues to get 5+2 seating layout and will be drawing power from the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 100 PS of power at 3750 RPM and 240 Nm of torque between 1600 – 2800 RPM. The updates will also extend to the regular version that gets a 5-speed manual gearbox.
