The upcoming SsangYong Tivoli-based Mahindra SUV will be launched in 5-seater and 7-seater configurations.
Seems like Mahindra is readying not one but two SUVs based on the SsangYong Tivoli. Codenamed the S201, one will be a sub-4-metre compact SUV (5-seater) which will rival the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Honda WR-V, while the other will be a stretched variant with third row seats (making it a 7-seater) rivaling the Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur.
Internationally, there are 2 variants of the SsangYong Tivoli available, in standard and XLV guises. The XLV is a little longer than the standard variant and gets an added 238 mm in terms of rear overhang, but used for making more room for boot space and not seating capacity. However, for India, this extra space could make way for an extra pair of seats in the third row.
The sub-4-metre S201 will essentially be a modified version of the SsangYong Tivoli with a length of less than 4-metres (to benefit from the tax concessions given to cars below 4-metres). The compact SUV will share its underpinnings and most of the interior parts with the SsangYong Tivoli, except for the front fascia. The design, especially the grille will be tweaked to make it look more like a Mahindra than a SsangYong.
The Mahindra S201 will draw power from 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre diesel motors. These engines will be developed in-house by the automaker and it is claimed that they will offer best-in-class performance. The S201 is expected to be launched sometime in the second half of 2018. Meanwhile, the XUV-maker is also working on the U321 MPV, TUV300 Plus.
