Mahindra Thar Roxx gets 5 stars for Adult Occupant Safety & Child Occupant Safety

The Mahindra Thar Roxx has achieved an impressive 5-star rating in the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) for both adult and child occupant safety. The Thar Roxx is one of the first Mahindra models to be evaluated by Bharat NCAP. Notably, it has secured the highest points among all internal combustion engine vehicles assessed by Bharat NCAP to date.

Adult Occupant Safety

The Mahindra Thar Roxx scored 31.09 out of a possible 32 points for adult occupant protection (AOP), making it one of the top performers in this category, second only to the Tata Punch EV (31.46/32 points). During testing, the Thar Roxx demonstrated good protection for the driver and front passenger’s head and neck. However, the protection for the driver’s chest and knee regions was rated as adequate.

The SUV achieved 15.09 out of 16 points in the frontal offset deformable barrier test and 16 out of 16 points in the side movable deformable barrier test, offering excellent protection overall. In the side pole impact test, the vehicle was rated as providing an acceptable level of protection.

The Thar Roxx also met Bharat NCAP’s Electronic Stability Control test requirements. However, Bharat NCAP does not provide specific information on the stability of the body shell.

Child Occupant Safety

For child occupant protection, the Thar Roxx received a score of 45 out of 49 points, matching the Tata Punch EV as the highest scorer so far. It achieved full points in both the dynamic test (24/24) and the child restraint system (CRS) installation test (12/12), while scoring 9 out of 13 points in the vehicle assessment test.

Testing was conducted using 18-month-old and 3-year-old child dummies, positioned in rearward-facing child seats in the front passenger seat and secured using ISOFIX anchorages and a support leg.

Standard Safety Features

Bharat NCAP tested the base-spec MX3 and mid-spec AX5 L variants of the Thar Roxx, with the rating applying to all variants of the vehicle. Standard safety features across all variants include six airbags, three-point seatbelts with reminders for all passengers, ESC, ISOFIX anchors for rear outboard seats and a passenger-side airbag cut-off switch. The Thar Roxx also complies with AIS-100 pedestrian protection norms, contributing to overall safety. The top-spec variants are equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System suite for enhanced safety.

The Thar Roxx becomes the first body-on-frame SUV to undergo testing under the Bharat NCAP standards. While Bharat NCAP’s crash testing offers insights into the Thar Roxx’s safety performance, it is less comprehensive compared to Global NCAP’s assessments, particularly regarding structural integrity and detailed safety parameters for child occupants.
