Mahindra Thar EV concept to showcase new design direction
Mahindra has teased the Thar EV concept that will be revealed at the South Africa event on 15th August. It will preview the design and electric powertrain technology of the upcoming off-roader.
The teaser video reveals the name of the concept, it will be called Mahindra Thar.e. There are some retro yet modern design elements in the teaser video of the concept.
The EV will get a square design theme having squared out LED headlights and tail lights. It might get a completely different styling to differentiate the EV version with the ICE powered Mahindra Thar.
More details will be revealed at the event but there are speculations that it will get a 4×4 system with a quad motor setup. It will also have some unique off-road tech with features like crab walk that we have seen on the electric Hummer.
We don’t know whether it will be based on a ladder frame chassis or a new dedicated monocoque EV platform. The production version is still a long while away. We don’t expect it to hit the showrooms before 2025.
There were rumours about Mahindra showcasing the bigger 5-door version of the Thar at this event but it is unlikely. Instead, they will showcase the new Thar EV concept along with their Scorpio-N based pickup truck concept that will be developed for the global markets as well.
Currently, the Mahindra Thar is available with RWD and 4×4 variants on offer. The RWD variants come with 1.5-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine options. The 4×4 variants come with 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine options.
