Post Tata Motors, now it’s Mahindra taking a dig at the newly-launched Jeep Compass.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles launched the ‘Made in India’ Jeep Compass very recently with a killer price tag of Rs. 14.95 lakhs for the petrol Sport variant and going all the way up to Rs. 20.65 lakhs for the diesel Limited (O) 4×4 variant, all prices (ex-showroom, Delhi).
At this price point, there are a number of SUVs that the Jeep Compass competes with. You have the Tata Hexa, Mahindra XUV500, and the Hyundai Tucson which is priced marginally higher. Facing heat from the Compass’ arrival into the Indian market, Tata was the first automaker to take a dig at the SUV by comparing it with its flagship Hexa. The first page of the comparison sheet released by Tata Motors read, “Takes you anywhere. No compass required”.
Post this, we now have Mahindra who’s taken a jab at the baby Jeep. The single page advertisement reads, “You don’t need a compass to win races, you need guts”, clearly highlighting how Indian manufacturers are getting intimidated by the launch of the Compass. First Tata, then Mahindra, wonder who’s next?
Observing all these developments happening around us, we probably could come to a conclusion that Jeep has indeed given sleepless nights to its competitors. While prices for the entry-level Jeep start at Rs. 15.45 lakhs (for the base diesel trim), the XUV500 is available from Rs. 12.19 lakhs, all prices (ex-showroom, Delhi). This makes the Compass dearer by approximately Rs. 3 lakhs, but one can comprehend it as the premium that a foreign brand commands in our market.
