Mahindra is planning to launch a range of compact vehicles in the near future. We have been seeing several test mules of the upcoming entry-level compact SUV from Mahindra, codenamed S101, which is expected around next year. Besides the S101, Mahindra is working on another compact SUV jointly with SsangYong, codenamed S102. Now, the Mahindra S102 will be the first product from the Mahindra-SsangYong’s joint platform project to compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport. Along with the all-new product, Mahindra and SsangYong are also developing a new family of compact engines.
The Mahindra S102 is based on the SsangYong’s X100 platform. Both the carmakers are developing an EcoBoost like 1-litre turbocharged petrol engine with variable valve timing and direct injection. The new compact engine is intended to produce strong power and return high fuel efficiency. The S102 is likely to be manufactured in Nashik and expected to be launched by 2015 end or early 2016. Mahindra has hinted a few more compact vehicles from the X100 platform. The S103 is speculated to be a crossover or a MPV based on the X100 platform to compete with the Maruti Ertiga, Honda Mobilio, Datsun Go +, etc.
The joint platform project between Mahindra and SsangYong help them reduce overall costs. They save around 5-7 percent on the material cost. The company has recently sourced a new automatic transmission for both Mahindra and SsangYong products. The carmakers are currently working on a new small Trans-axle for front wheel drive vehicles. By the time Mahindra will launch the S102, the compact SUV segment would see new products. It is an uphill task for the Indian automaker but we can expect better quality, equipment levels and competitive pricing from the upcoming baby Mahindra.
