Mahindra is testing the Maxximo Electric variant on Indians roads. It will soon be launched here and would be the first electric commercial vehicle by the Indian automobile giant.
With the rising demand for petrol and diesel, the oil reserves are going to end one day or the other. Since supply is limited and demand is constantly increasing, the prices of both the fuels have seen an upward trend in the long run. The fact that these fuels pollute the environment quite a bit had made companies worldwide think for alternate solutions to power up vehicles. The most common alternative power source for automobiles till date is electricity. The main reason for electric power being used widely is its availability across nations and relatively lower cost of production.
Until now, we have only seen a few electric vehicles in India all of which didn’t sell much due to two reasons. The first being their high sticker price while the other being their low practicality. However, we haven’t had any electric commercial vehicle till date in India and this is about to change as Mahindra will soon launch the Maxximo Electric which has been spied by our reader Pavamana.
Developed in coordination with its in-house electric brand Reva, it is powered by a 20 HP electric motor which produces 62 Nm of torque. The figures look low, right? Well not really. The vehicle is capable of touching 65 km/hr at which it is electronically limited. With a charge time of 8 hours and a range 100 kms on a full charge, it is suitable for intra-city operations.
In the month of January this year, Mahindra gave four Maxximo Electric vans to Agra Development Authority under a pilot project to use for ferrying tourists in the green corridor created near the Taj Mahal to reduce emissions around the historical monument. This pilot project was one of the first ones built to offer smarter transportation solutions. Reva, owned by Mahindra, has been working on a range of electric vehicles which includes the Verito Electric targeted at car buyers and the Gio electric for the commercial buyers. We appreciate Mahindra for taking the lead in the field of electric vehicles in the country.
