Mahindra refutes claims of BE 6 sensor failure, reaffirms vehicle’s functionality

Mahindra has addressed allegations circulating on social media and in news reports regarding the stoppage of its electric vehicle, the BE 6, following a minor accident in Hyderabad. The company has categorically refuted claims that the vehicle stalled due to a sensor failure.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Mahindra clarified that the claims are “baseless and incorrect.” The automaker stated that the vehicle was fully operational after the accident and was moved to the side of the road immediately. Following standard protocol, the BE 6 was then transported to a dealership for further inspection.

A video that has gone viral shows the aftermath of a collision involving the BE 6 and a Datsun hatchback. The video alleges that the electric vehicle became immobile due to a sensor malfunction triggered by the rear-end collision. Mahindra, however, has firmly dismissed these assertions, emphasising the vehicle’s functionality at the time of the incident.

BE 6 and XEV 9e

Mahindra recently launched the BE 6 and XEV 9e, its flagship electric vehicles, in November. The BE 6 is priced starting at Rs. 18.90 lakhs (ex-showroom), while the XEV 9e begins at Rs. 21.90 lakhs. Both models are equipped with advanced technology and offer two battery options: a 59 kWh and a 79 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) pack.

The BE 6 and XEV 9e are part of Mahindra’s ambitious EV strategy, backed by a significant investment of Rs. 16,000 crore allocated for the FY22-FY27 cycle. Of this, Rs. 4500 crore has been dedicated to developing and manufacturing these vehicles, including investments in powertrain and software development, as well as enhancing manufacturing capacity.

Expansion of Production Capacity

To meet growing demand, Mahindra is establishing a new production facility at its automotive division in Chakan. The facility, which is scheduled for completion by March 2025, will have the capacity to produce 90,000 units annually. This expansion underscores Mahindra’s commitment to the EV market as it competes in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

While the accident and subsequent video have sparked online discussions, Mahindra’s response highlights the company’s focus on transparency and customer trust. The incident also underscores the importance of thorough investigations and fact-checking before drawing conclusions about technological advancements in electric vehicles.
