Mahindra Bolero & Scorpio electric among 7 new EVs that will be launched by 2030

Mahindra has plans to electrify the popular Bolero and Scorpio models, introducing them as the Bolero.e and Scorpio.e. This move is part of the company’s broader strategy to roll out seven new electric vehicles in India by 2030. Mahindra’s executive director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector, Rajesh Jejurikar, emphasised that all internal combustion engine brands would gradually transition to electric versions.

During a recent investor presentation, Mahindra reiterated its commitment to electrifying the Bolero and Scorpio models. These EVs, like their siblings – the XUV.e and the Thar.e – will adopt the ‘.e’ suffix. While specific details about the Scorpio.e and Bolero.e remain under wraps, industry experts suggest that these models may not feature a ladder-frame chassis, which presents challenges for electric vehicle design.

The Thar.e concept, unveiled last August, showcased a modified version of Mahindra’s INGLO (INdia GLObal) skateboard platform, codenamed P1. This platform, with a wheelbase ranging from 2775 mm to 2975 mm, could potentially be used for the all-electric Scorpio and Bolero. For comparison, the current Bolero has a 2680 mm wheelbase, while the Scorpio N measures 2750 mm between the wheels.

Consistent with Mahindra’s approach to its other EVs, the Scorpio.e and Bolero.e are expected to share battery packs and motors. The Thar.e concept featured a 109 HP/135 Nm front motor and a 286 HP/535 Nm rear motor, providing all-wheel-drive capability. Although battery specifications were not disclosed, it is anticipated that the platform will support 60kWh and 80kWh battery packs, offering ranges of approximately 325 km and 435-450 km, respectively, based on the WLTP standards.

The exact launch dates for the Scorpio.e and Bolero.e have not been announced. However, with Mahindra’s commitment to introducing seven new EVs by 2030, these models are likely to be part of this lineup.

In addition to its electric vehicle initiatives, Mahindra is preparing a complete overhaul of the Bolero diesel variant. The next generation Bolero will be built on a new ladder-frame architecture called U171, which will underpin several new SUVs and pickup trucks. The first model on this platform, expected to be the next gen Bolero, is anticipated to launch by 2026-27. This platform is projected to support at least three new SUV models, potentially boosting Mahindra’s annual volumes to around 1,50,000 units. Once the pickup range transitions to this platform, the volume potential could eventually double.
