Mahindra plans to become a force to be reckoned with in the electric vehicle (EV) segment in India over the next few years.
The Indian carmaker will invest around Rs. 3000 crores in EV technology in the next 3 to 5 years as it aims for EVs to constitute 30 percent of its overall passenger vehicle sales in the 2027-2030 period.
While Tata Motors’ Nexon EV is currently leading the charge in the battery electric vehicle segment (BEV) in India, Mahindra too wants in on the action. The firm is soon expected to introduce the eXUV300 to take on the best-selling EV in the market.
But that is not all, for, Executive Director (Auto and Farm sectors), Mahindra, Rajesh Jejurikar has revealed that besides the eXUV300, the carmaker also has a “couple of other projects” in the pipeline.
We reckon these could be the battery electric versions of the Scorpio and the XUV500, ICE variants of which are due for a generation change, as the firm aims to become the leader in the electric SUV space.
They may well be called the eScorpio and the eXUV500 when put on sale in the market. Furthermore, the Mahindra EV lineup could well consist of an electric MPV based on the Marazzo too.
Two bespoke architectures will be developed to manufacture the Mahindra EV lineup and like many others of their ilk, the platforms will house the battery pack, electric motors, control module and suspension components.
Pininfarina is expected to design these upcoming Mahindra EV models that are likely to be developed in close association with Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC).
