The new Discovery Sport replaces the Freelander in India and is being brought down via the CKD route like its predecessor being assembled at the Chakan based facility.
Landing on Indian shores exactly a year after its international debut, Land Rover has launched the 2015 Discovery Sport luxury SUV in the country with prices starting at Rs. 46.1 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The new Discovery Sport replaces the very capable yet ageing Freelander 2 in the automaker’s lineup and is based on the Discovery Vision concept while sharing its underpinnings with the Evoque. The all-new Discovery Sport will be locking horns with the BMW X3, Mercedes M-Class, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 in the segment.
In terms of dimensions, the 2015 Land Rover Discovery measures 4590 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2741 mm, and is 91 mm taller and 80 mm longer than the outgoing Freelander. The styling is reminiscent of the original concept, albeit in an evolved fashion and lends an edgy design to the SUV. True to its roots, the high rising bumper at the front and rear opens up enhanced space offering an approach angle of 25 degrees and a departure angle of 31 degrees. The ground clearance stands at 212 mm on the new Discovery.
Inside the cabin, the new Land Rover Discovery Sport comes loaded with features including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with integrated voice-controlled satellite navigation, 5+2 seating layout, multiple USB connectivity points and the automaker’s famous All-Terrain mode. The cabin also boasts of interesting bits like a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, 16-speaker Meridian audio system, dual-zone climate control and much more. You also get reclinable seats on the second row of the Discovery Sport that helps enhance legroom to a total of 999 mm. Other features on the model include LED DRLs, tyre pressure monitor, cruise control, ambient lighting, park assist and much more.
The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport comes with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder motor available in two versions – TD4 and SD4. The TD4 diesel mill churns out 150 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque, while the SD4 version produces 190 PS of power with 420 Nm of torque. It comes paired to the 9-speed ZF automatic transmission offered as standard that sends power to all four wheels via the Haldex All-Wheel Drive system. The Discovery Sport is being brought into the country via the CKD route like its predecessor that has helped keep the prices competitive and the company has already received over 200 bookings ever since the order books opened early last month.
