KTM AMT technology details officially revealed, to be showcased later this month
KTM has officially revealed details about its highly anticipated Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), a cutting-edge technology set to enhance the riding experience. Initially previewed on the 1390 Super Adventure R prototype at the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo earlier this year, the new transmission offers a blend of manual and automatic shifting modes, designed to meet the varying demands of riders.
A Unique Approach to Transmission
KTM’s AMT is built around a centrifugal clutch system, which sets it apart from conventional automatic or manual transmissions. This clutch design reduces the chances of stalling and offers improved low-speed control, making it ideal for both urban commutes and off-road adventures. Gear shifts are managed electronically through an ECU and Transmission Control Unit, working with an electromechanical shift actuator to deliver swift gear changes.
According to KTM, the AMT provides gear shifts in just 50 milliseconds, putting it on par with quickshifters found in high-performance bikes. Riders can choose between fully automatic shifting or manual control, which can be accessed via a paddle shift or foot gear lever.
AMT Modes and Features
KTM’s AMT includes three distinct shift modes to cater to different riding styles: Comfort, Street and Sport. Each mode adjusts the shift timings based on various factors such as engine speed, torque, vehicle speed and rider inputs. In automatic mode, the system can adapt to riding conditions, with a kick-down function that shifts to a lower gear for quick overtakes.
Another innovative feature of KTM’s AMT is the Park gear. Unlike traditional motorcycles, which use a 1-N-2-3-4-5-6 shift sequence, KTM’s AMT follows a car-like P-N-1-2-3-4-5-6 pattern. This Park gear locks the rear wheel, solving a potential issue with centrifugal clutches that can’t hold the vehicle in place on inclines or uneven surfaces. This addition ensures stability when parked in challenging conditions.
Compatibility and Future Models
While the AMT was first showcased on the 1390 Super Adventure prototype, KTM has not yet disclosed which production models will receive the new transmission. However, it’s expected that the 1390 Super Adventure S EVO, set to be unveiled on 22nd October, will feature the AMT system. Other models sharing the same engine platform are also likely candidates for this technology in the future.
High-Rev Limiter and Adaptive Cruise Control Integration
For performance-oriented riders, KTM’s AMT offers a switchable High Rev limiter, enabling gear changes closer to the redline for a more aggressive ride. Additionally, KTM’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) works seamlessly with the AMT, providing enhanced safety and convenience. When ACC is active, the system can decelerate the motorcycle to a standstill if the vehicle in front stops. If the stop lasts less than three seconds, the motorcycle resumes acceleration automatically. For longer stops, the rider needs to manually accelerate or hit the resume button.
