KTM to replace 125 Duke & RC 125 with new 160cc models, targeting Yamaha
KTM is preparing to make a strategic shift in its entry-level lineup for the Indian market. The popular 125 Duke and RC 125 are expected to be phased out, making way for new 160cc models that are being developed specifically for India. This move will allow the brand to compete more directly with Yamaha’s highly successful 155cc offerings — the R15 V4 and the MT-15.
Targeting Yamaha’s 155cc Segment
KTM’s decision to introduce the 160 Duke and RC 160 is closely tied to the growing popularity of Yamaha’s 155cc motorcycles. Together, the R15 V4 and MT-15 account for a significant portion of monthly two-wheeler sales in this segment, with volumes reportedly reaching around 20,000 units per month. With the new 160cc models, KTM aims to tap into this demand by offering more performance and features in the same price bracket.
Platform and Design
The upcoming 160 Duke and RC 160 will share their foundations with KTM’s existing 200cc models. The 160 Duke is expected to carry forward the second-generation Duke styling currently seen on the 200 Duke, while the RC 160 will adopt the sharper, more aggressive design language found on the latest RC 200 and RC 390.
Underpinning both motorcycles will be KTM’s familiar trellis frame, paired with 43mm upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock suspension setup. In terms of equipment, both bikes are likely to offer similar features as their 200cc counterparts, including a dual-channel ABS system and an LCD instrument console.
Engine and Performance
The new 160cc engine will be derived from KTM’s existing 200cc motor, although it will be downsized to suit the new segment. Power output is expected to fall in the 19 to 20 HP range, a substantial increase over the current 125cc models, which produce 14.5 HP. This would also give the new KTM bikes a slight power advantage over Yamaha’s 155cc engines, which produce around 18.4 HP.
At the same time, the 160s will be positioned well below KTM’s 200cc models, which deliver around 25hp, ensuring clear segmentation within the brand’s lineup.
Expected Pricing and Launch Timeline
Pricing for the KTM 160 Duke and RC 160 is expected to be competitive with Yamaha’s models, though it is unlikely that KTM will undercut the R15 V4 or MT-15.
Considering the current KTM 125 Duke and RC 125 are priced at Rs. 1.81 lakh and Rs. 1.92 lakh respectively, the new 160cc offerings are expected to fall within a similar or slightly higher price range.
KTM is expected to officially unveil the 160 Duke and RC 160 around mid-2025, potentially aligning with the festive season. The RC 160 could either debut alongside the Duke or arrive shortly after.
A More Appealing Entry Point for KTM Buyers
With these upcoming 160cc motorcycles, KTM is looking to offer better value to entry-level buyers, combining enhanced performance, competitive features, and the brand’s sporty design language. For customers considering KTM’s entry-level range, the arrival of the 160 Duke and RC 160 promises to deliver more performance and features for their money.
