Kia Sonet is among those much hyped about cars and reasons to buy one are many. After multiple teasers came the official unveil event, following which, finally, the compact SUV got launched today. Priced between Rs. 6.71 lakhs and 11.99 lakhs (ex-showroom), it is priced on equal terms with its rivals. But, like all things in life, the car does come with good and bad stuff, so let us see what’s what.
Kia Sonet 4 Reasons To Buy
Styling – Compact SUVs might sometimes look ungainly due to the short wheelbase and tall-riding stance. However, the Sonet’s design is done well enough for it to be called stylish. Tick the GT-Line box and it gets red accents which adds to the flair that bold design elements already bestowed the car with.
Features – There are many, like 10.25-inch touchscreen, AI voice command, LED sound mood lighting, ventilated front seats, BOSE premium 7-speaker audio system, OTA map updates, UVO connected car tech, multi-drive and traction modes, among many others. The six variants offered on the car are well specced.
Multiple engine and gearbox options – This would be the most alluring aspect in the Kia Sonet reasons to buy list. There are two petrols – a 1.2-litre Smartstream and a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit and a 1.5-litre diesel with WGT and VGT. Depending upon the engine and variant selected, customers can choose from five transmission options.
Good fit and finish – Being a new brand, Kia wants to attract more customers. Now, with a product like the Sonet, it is the number of features, build quality, safety and connectivity options that will catch the attention of the current set of buyers. The Sonet does not disappoint on the fit and finish section as all items seem fitted to last a long while and good quality materials have been used.
4 Reasons Not To Buy
Rear seat space – It is not claustrophobic, but it is not what one would call roomy either. Rear seat passengers will have a snug fit and a third occupant will not be welcome. Legroom could have been better, but since it is the Venue’s twin, the former’s shortcomings have filtered through to the Sonet as well.
1.2-litre petrol engine performance – Producing 83 PS and 115 Nm, the 1.2-litre engine is decent at best. Mated to a 5-speed manual, it does the job, but leaves us wanting more. Fortunately, there is a 1.0-litre turbo petrol for people who want more power. The fact that fuel economy figures between the two petrols is nearly identical also works against the naturally aspirated motor.
Steering feel – The car’s handling is neutral at best. Also, passengers will encounter some body roll in spite of the stiff suspension. This would not be bothersome had the steering provided good feel, but it is not the case. At low speeds it is vague, but mercifully, it at least weighs up as the speed rises but doesn’t really offer any feedback.
Service network – Since the carmaker is new to the country, it will take some time for it to set up a comprehensive service network. This might be the top most reason that goes against Kia Sonet reasons to buy list. Do not expect prominent manufacturer-like number of centres anytime soon. But, the brand has covered most major cities and is working on further expansion.
