Kia PV5 Unveils At World EV Day, Showcases A Brand’s First Effort For A Van
Kia has unveiled the PV5 in the Kia’s World EV Day. The EV is based on Hyundai Motor Group’s eS platform which makes this EV van ready for commercial and passenger vehicle use. Let’s understand how the PV5 revolutionises the segment.
Styling
The styling of the Kia PV5 is meant to integrate with the brand’s design language. This is why the PV5 features vertically placed DRLs with lights in the lower bumper. The PV5 will be available in multiple configurations including passenger, cargo and chassis cab models offering versatility.
The PV5’s Passenger and Cargo may share an overall silhouette but there are key differences between the two. The Passenger model features a clean and handsome design with large windows in black accents. There is also a black trim on side panels and wheel arches which make it sportier.
The Cargo variant has a boxy and practical aesthetic that doesn’t pay much attention to the looks of the vehicle. It focuses more on providing function than worrying about form. The rear tailgate in the passenger model is replaced with dual side opening doors, facilitating loading and unloading.
Battery Performance & Range
The PV5 will be offered with a choice of three battery options: 43.3 kWh LFP unit and two NCM options: 51.5 kWh and 71.2 kWh. The passenger variant, with the largest battery option, delivers a range of 400 Km.
All the motors will be front mounted which produces 161 HP and 250 Nm of torque. However, more details regarding battery is yet to be disclosed. The fast DC Charging capability allows the battery pack to charge from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.
Kia eGMP Platform
The Kia PV5 is built upon Kia’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (e-GMP). It is an evolution of the existing eGMP platform, specialised for commercial operations. The new platform aims to be more affordable by standardising key components such as battery packs and electric motors, enhancing efficiency.
Practicality
Kia PV5 Cargo Variant is offered in three configurations: Standard, Long Roof and High Roof. The maximum cargo capacity provided is 5100 litres. The standard and long roof variants have two front seats with an optional third seat.
Buyers can also choose an L-track mounting configuration, improving cargo versatility. The Chassis Cab iteration is based on the Cargo Model but the buyers take delivery as an incomplete platform. This allows businesses to customize it to their requirements such as flatbed trucks and refrigerated transport.
Interior
The interior of the PV5 is a minimal design with a 7-inch instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS. For increased practicality and better use of space, the PV5 has a vertically oriented centre console with a two-spoke steering wheel with a column-mounted transmission lever.
Outlook
Overall, the PV5 has the potential to be one of the most successful passenger and cargo vans. It innovatively incorporates some intelligent features, assisting the target audience in ways they wouldn’t have previously. The PV5 is expected to launch in the latter half of 2025 and it will be fascinating to see it in competition with the likes of Volkswagen ID Buzz.
