Kia Developing Three-Row Hybrid SUV To Rival Mahindra XUV700 & Tata Safari

KIA Concept EV9 6

The new Kia three-row SUV will be based on the Sorento

Kia India is gearing up to introduce a brand-new three-row SUV, internally codenamed MQ4i, to its portfolio. Positioned above the popular Seltos, the MQ4i is set to debut in the Indian market before being rolled out globally. The upcoming SUV will directly compete with segment heavyweights such as the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.

Production Plans

Kia plans to manufacture the MQ4i at its Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh, which will serve as the mother plant for the model. The company is targeting an annual production of 50,000 units of this SUV to cater to both domestic and export markets. With this addition, Kia’s total production capacity, which was expanded to 4,30,000 units last year, is expected to approach half a million vehicles annually by 2027.

Competitive Landscape

The MQ4i will not only face competition from the XUV700 and Safari but also from upcoming entrants in the segment. Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are developing their own three-row SUVs, codenamed Y17 and Hyryder respectively, both of which are expected to feature petrol-hybrid powertrains.

Hyundai’s Parallel Development

Kia’s sister brand Hyundai is also in the race with its own three-row SUV, codenamed Ni1i. Sharing underpinnings with the MQ4i, the Hyundai model will also sport a petrol-hybrid setup and will be manufactured at Hyundai’s new facility near Pune.

Strategic Growth

Kia India’s Managing Director and CEO, Gwanggu Lee, recently emphasised the company’s focus on achieving an annual sales target of 4,00,000 units in India by 2030. Lee projected double-digit growth for the brand in the coming year, driven by the launch of new models, including the MQ4i.

With the MQ4i, Kia is making a bold move to strengthen its presence in the competitive three-row SUV segment. Its India-first strategy, hybrid technology and anticipated spacious design position it as a strong contender against established and upcoming rivals. As the competition heats up, consumers can look forward to a wider range of innovative options in the growing segment.
