FCA has finally launched the Jeep brand in India and the Wrangler Unlimited is the entry point to the iconic American off-road brand.
After a long wait and multiple cancelations, Jeep has finally entered the Indian car market with the launch of two vehicles – the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. While the Grand Cherokee is offered in three variants, the Wrangler is offered in a single trim called Unlimited. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has been priced at Rs. 71,59,104/- (ex-showroom, Delhi) which is certainly way more than anyone expected.
Powering the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 is a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder EcoDiesel engine that belts out 200 PS of power at 3600 RPM and 460 Nm of torque between 1600-2600 RPM. This powerplant is paired to a 5-speed automatic gearbox and ARAI claimed mileage is 12.1 km/l. The company claims the Jeep Wrangler is ‘the most capable production 4×4 vehicle in the world’. The Command Trac 4×4 system gets heavy duty solid axles, 17-inch Goodyear tyres and 18 bolt main case joint clamping. The ground clearance of this 2119 kgs SUV is a generous 238.2 mm.
The vehicle comes with removable doors, removable hard top, wash-out interiors with drain plugs and lockable centre console. It gets automatic climate control, tyre pressure monitoring, heated front seats, 6.5-inch Uconnect touch-screen audio system with navigation, voice commands and 40 GB hard drive, paired to a 9-speaker Alpine system. The Wrangler Unlimited is available in six colours.
FCA is bringing the Wrangler to India via the CBU route and the vehicle will act as a brand builder since local production of an all new premium SUV will commence in India next year, at the automaker’s manufacturing plant in Ranjangaon, near Pune. 10 new dealerships will be opened in India in nine cities in 2016, the first one has already commenced operations in Ahmedabad.
