Jeep could use Citroen C3 platform to develop the new affordable SUV
In a strategic move to tap into the growing sub-Rs. 20 lakh SUV market, Jeep India is planning to introduce a more affordable model that retains the brand’s distinctive DNA. Shailesh Hazela, the newly appointed Managing Director and CEO of Stellantis India, revealed the company’s intent to cater to the growing demand in the Rs. 15-20 lakhs price bracket.
Traditionally, Jeep has focused on the premium SUV market, primarily offering models in the Rs. 25 lakh-plus price range. However, recent trends indicate a shift in consumer demand, with a growing number of buyers now seeking vehicles in the Rs. 17 lakh segment. Recognising this shift, Jeep India is adapting its strategy to target this emerging market. The company sees this as a crucial area to expand its presence, aligning its product offerings with the changing market dynamics.
Leveraging Citroen’s Platform
The upcoming SUV is expected to be built on Citroen’s Common Modular Platform (CMP), which already underpins several vehicles in Citroen’s Indian lineup, including the C3 hatchback, eC3, Basalt and the C3 Aircross. While the project is still in its early stages, industry insiders suggest that Jeep’s new model could provide a unique offering in its segment by incorporating advanced features like all-wheel drive (AWD) or 4×4 technology—hallmarks of the Jeep brand.
A Global Vision
Hazela highlighted that the upcoming Jeep model wouldn’t be confined to the Indian market alone but with a global perspective in mind. The SUV is expected to have a significant presence in international markets, especially within the ASEAN region. Jeep aims to position this model in the sub-Rs. 20 lakh segment while ensuring it retains the brand’s signature features and technological innovations, with a focus on long-term sustainability in the market for the next 7-8 years.
As Jeep prepares to enter a more competitive price bracket, it will likely face stiff competition from established models like the Hyundai Creta and the Tata Curvv. However, with the brand’s focus on maintaining its off-road capability and rugged appeal, Jeep aims to carve out a unique space in the midsize SUV segment.
This development marks an important pivot for Jeep India as it seeks to broaden its appeal and reach a wider customer base, while still staying true to the brand’s core values of adventure and capability.
