The Jeep Commander unveil took place in South America
The official unveil of the Jeep Commander, which will be launched next year in India under the Meridian moniker, has taken place overseas.
Based on the Jeep Compass, the 3-row SUV comes with quite a few visual differences so as to avoid being called a 3-row Compass.
Inspired by the styling of the Grand Cherokee L, the Commander gets Jeep’s signature grille, sleek headlights, generous chrome embellishment, new bumper with DRLs situated above the fog lights and a wide air dam upfront.
Along the sides, the increased length of the vehicle can be clearly seen. The upper window line is marked through chrome detailing, while the rear doors are larger than those on the Compass.
At the back, Jeep has opted to use a set of slim LED tail lamps which are connected with a chrome bar, while the tail gate is upright. Apart from a neat bumper with faux skid plate, the SUV also gets a roof spoiler.
Measuring 4769 mm long, 1859 mm wide, 1682 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2794 mm, the Commander is bigger than the Compass in every aspect.
Inside, having inherited the dashboard from the facelifted Compass, the Commander comes with metal trim pieces and a new suede fabric on the dash and on the door cards.
What’s more, the centre console has rose gold accents, the seats (it has 3 rows of them) are upholstered in a mix of leather and suede fabric and the front centre armrest has ‘Jeep 1941’ embossing.
On the equipment front, the Jeep Commander gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, electrically adjustable front seats, panoramic sunroof, electronic tailgate, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless device charger, connected car tech, among others.
The Brazil-spec Jeep Commander can be specced with either a 1.3-litre turbo petrol motor (185 HP and 270 Nm) with a 6-speed auto or a 2,0-litre diesel engine (170 HP and 380 Nm) with a 9-speed auto and 4-wheel drive.
When it gets launched in India as the Meridian by the middle of 2022, the SUV will likely feature a 2.0-litre diesel engine with mild-hybrid assist.
