The Honda City has dethroned the Maruti Ciaz to acquire the top spot in its division.
Sedans are losing their charm in the Indian market due to the never-ending buzz around SUVs. In January 2020, all the 4 segments – Compact sedans, executive sedans and premium sedans have cumulatively recorded a decline in sales.
First, we talk about the compact sedan segment. The Maruti Dzire, once again bags the first position, however, this time with a positive YoY of 17%. Second, in the list is the Hyundai Xcent which sold 6691 units along with the Aura. The Hyundai Xcent/Aura has replaced the Honda Amaze to obtain the second position, which held the spot for most of the months last year. The Honda Amaze registered a negative 60% YoY figure followed by Tata Tigor with a -62% YoY. The Tata Zest sold just 24 units with a 96% degrowth.
Overall, the compact sedan division saw a -2% YoY growth with only the Maruti Dzire and the Hyundai Xcent/Aura gaining positive YoY numbers.
Coming to the executive sedan division, it is the Honda City which obtained the top spot. It is one of the rare times when a Maruti car is not topping the list. Well, the drop in sales has placed the Ciaz at the third position with a negative 72% YoY figure. The Ciaz is closely followed by the Skoda Rapid which sold 815 units. Meanwhile, the Toyota Yaris and the Nissan Sunny scored positive this month with 111% and 117% growth, respectively. Cumulatively, the segment saw a steep decline in sales with a negative 58% YoY growth.
In the premium sedan segment, Skoda Octavia retains the top spot after selling 207 units as compared to 173 in January 2019. The Honda Civic sold 146 units, 32 units lesser than what it sold in the last month. The Hyundai Elantra’s sales declined by 7% than last year. Toyota sold no units of the Corolla. The premium sedan division recorded a mere -3% degrowth cumulatively.
At last, we have the luxury sedan segment. The Skoda Superb tops the chart again with 136 units sold and a YoY growth of 89%. Next up is the Toyota Camry which observed a 10% decrease in sales. It is followed by the Volkswagen Passat and the Honda Accord which did not sell even a single unit. The luxury sedan segment observed a -9% YoY growth.
