Maruti continues to dominate all three divisions of the hatchback segment.
The hatchback segment is the segment that has the most first-time car buyers. If we look back on how they’ve fared in the last 2 months, the numbers are almost similar.
Maruti Alto is maintaining its streak with 18,914 units sales in January 2020. Although, if compared to January 2019 sales, there is -19% YoY degrowth. Maruti S-Presso sales have been decreasing from the past 2 months, with 11,220 and 8394 units being sold in November 2019 and December 2019, respectively. The Renault Kwid has suffered a -30% YoY, selling only 3281 units. Datsun managed to sell 1020 units of Redi-GO and registered a 15% sales increase from last year. The Tata Nano and the Hyundai Eon have failed to sell even a single unit.
The entry-level hatchback segment recorded a positive 4% growth with Datsun Redi-GO being the only one to gain a positive YoY growth.
Coming to the compact hatchback segment, only 2 out of 14 products have recorded positive numbers. The YoY for January 2020 stands at -14% for the compact hatchback division. Just like last month, the Maruti Swift continues to be the top-selling product after selling 19,981 units in January 2020. It also has a positive YoY figure at 6% followed by 52% scored by the Maruti WagonR at the 2nd position. Hyundai Santro registered sale of 3671 units. The Maruti Ignis and the Toyota Liva recorded -100% YoY numbers as not even a single unit was sold.
Topping the premium hatchback segment is the Maruti Baleno, the only vehicle which recorded positive growth in this segment. Maruti Baleno recorded a 23% growth, selling 20,485 units in January 2020 as compared to 16,717 units in January 2019. The recently launched Tata Altroz recorded a sale of 4505 units. The Volkswagen Polo, Ford Freestyle and the Honda Jazz continue to degrow with negative 56%, 80% and 97% YoY figures respectively. Overall, the segment registered a positive 10% growth.
