The 2012 Jaguar XF recently went on sales in Europe and America. While the American model boasts of high powered engine, the European Jaguar XF now features a 2.2-liter diesel engine, which is highly fuel efficient. Tata Motors will launch the XF facelift in India along with the 2.2-liter engine, helping the company to price the car very aggressively. The current Jaguar XF diesel utilizes a 3.0-liter motor, pushing the price over half a crore. However, with the lower displacement 2.2-liter motor from the Land Rover Freelander 2, the Jaguar XF will be priced around Rs. 35 lakhs.
The strategy to go for a smaller engine on the XF comes on the back of the success of the BMW 520d and Mercedes E250 CDI. Both the German cars use a sub-2.5 liter diesel engine to reduce prices of both these models. The XF 2.2 would also be the first Jaguar to be assembled in India and Tata Motors is already assembling the Freelander 2 at the JLR facility in Pune. Since the engine in both the XF and Freelander is the same, it won’t be difficult for Tata Motors to assemble the 2012 XF in India.
The 2012 Jaguar XF is the first car from the JLR stable to use start-stop technology. The Ford sourced engine is mated to a 8=speed ZF automatic gearbox. The 2.2-liter, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel engine is the same unit that also does duty on the Ford Mondeo in Europe. It produces 190 hp of power and 450 Nm of torque and reaches 100 kmph in 8.5 seconds. The top speed of the Jaguar XF 2.2-liter diesel is 225 kmph.
The 2012 XF features changes to the interiors and exteriors along with few features borrowed from the XJ. The seats have been revised and new colour combinations have been added for personalization. The colour scheme for the center console, fascia and steering wheel have been changed. The main driver instrument cluster is now a full-colour TFT unit.
