A camouflaged facelifted Jaguar XF was spotted testing in Pune recently. It is suspected that the engine being tested under the hood is a 2.2-litre turbo diesel unit. Jaguar has already begun the CKD assembly of the 3-litre V6 XF at Chikli recently and now it is expected that the company will fit in the entry level 2.2-litre turbo diesel in the India-spec XF. The 2.2-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel engine will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and it will churn out a peak power of 190 BHP and a peak torque of 450 Nm. The engine Start-Stop feature will be standard on this unit.
The 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine will be borrowed from its siblings, the Land Rover Freelander 2 and the Range Rover Evoque crossover. This engine is known for producing good fuel efficiency and this can be a major selling point for the India-spec Jaguar XF Diesel. The price is expected to be around Rs. 40 lakh for the Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel luxury sedan and it will give a tough competition to its German rivals like the Audi A6, the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The 2.2-litre engine will weigh about 65 kgs less than the 3.0-litre V6 diesel. The lower weight may result in sharper steering response as well, which should make the handling more delightful. With more aggressive pricing, the XF will appeal to a larger audience. Indian buyers will now have more options in this affordable luxury sedan segment with the 2.2-litre diesel powered XF. Jaguar is also set to be working on a BMW 3-Series rival which is expected to be unveiled in 2014.
