The country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India has finally announced about its plans to bid adieu to a vehicle that has grown from being a people’s car to a legacy or an iconic image. In an era which was dominated by the Hindustan Motors’ made Ambassador and the Premier Padmini, Maruti Suzuki brought in the diminutive 800 to herald a revolution in the Indian auto industry. The car was launched in the year 1983 and has grossed close to 2.7 million units of sales since its launch.
The sole idea behind launching the Maruti 800 model to the Indian market was to give the common man who couldn’t afford an Ambassador or a Padmini a chance to own a car. The Maruti 800 ruled the Indian streets till 2004 when the company launched another successful model, the Maruti Suzuki Alto. By 2011, the Maruti 800 was stopped selling in 11 cities since it couldn’t comply with the BSIV emission norms.
Mr. IV Rao, managing executive officer, engineering, Maruti Suzuki told during the launch of the Ertiga that the company has planned to stop the production of the Maruti 800 model from the end of April. The Maruti 800 would surely remain etched in the minds of the car lovers as one of the greatest cars of all times. Also I am sure all of US must be some sort of emotional connect with the model for which we are surely going to miss it. Rest in peace Maruti 800.
