The new futuristic design language gives a distinctive & premium look to the Pajero Sport

One of its most recognisable products globally, Mitsubishi has officially unveiled the 2016 Pajero Sport to the world. Rivalling the likes of new generation Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest (Endeavour in India), Isuzu MU-X, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the all-new Pajero Sport is being called as ‘Designed to Perfection’ by the company and gets a completely new design language with a more futuristic appeal, while the underpinnings are shared with the LS200 pickup truck. The new generation Pajero is India bound and is likely to go on sale in the first half of 2016.

Starting with the dimensions, the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport measures 4785 mm in length, growing by 90 mm, 1815 mm in width same as the outgoing model and 1805 mm in height, lower by 35 mm. The wheelbase measures at 2800 mm, whereas the ground clearance has increased to 218 mm. The styling on the new Pajero Sport is similar to the LS200 and gets a very busy looking front fascia. The upper half of the grille is divided by three horizontal slats while the lower section gets a large black finished grille with chrome elements on either sides. The bumper offers a sleek appearance while the headlights with LED projectors merge completely into the grille’s design appearing as a single unit.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport continues to look massive in proportions, riding on 18-inch alloy wheels with a tall stance and a high moving belt-line. At the rear, the SUV gets vertically stacked LED tail lights extending down to the bumper, while the tailgate sports a bulge giving the rear a bloated appearance. Inside the cabin, the interior takes cues from the LS200 and emerges as extremely premium. You get a four-spoke multi-function steering wheel, dual zone auto climate control, wireless infrared headphones, stability control and a touchscreen infotainment unit with split screen display.

There is also a dial for the All Wheel Control (AWC) system that allows you to toggle between 4WD settings. In its latest avatar too, the 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport continues to be a 7-seater with a flexible third row to maximise cargo space. Under the hood, the new generation SUV will get a 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo diesel engine that produces 181 PS and 430 Nm of torque, paired to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. There will also be a 6-speed manual gearbox on offer, replacing the current 5-speed unit. In addition, the SUV gets the updated Super Select 4WD II equipping the SUV with a low-range gearbox and differential lock.

In terms of fuel efficiency, Mitsubishi says the new Pajero Sport has improved by 17 percent, while the CO2 emissions have tucked under 200 g/km. The new generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport also comes with a host of advanced safety options including 7 airbags, Forward Collision Mitigation System, Blind Spot Warning, Multi Around Monitor that offers a 360-degree view of the vehicle, Active Stability and Traction Control and Hill Descent Control System. The new generation Pajero Sport will continue to come via the CKD route in India and will be the automaker’s torch bearer. Prices for the new model start at an Indian equivalent of Rs. 20.82 lakhs going up to Rs. 26.51 lakhs for the 4WD version.
