An electric version of the Hyundai Xcent is likely to be launched in India, to be an affordable budget EV.
Hyundai is considering launching an electric version of the Xcent sedan in the Indian market. The company is considering a number of battery-powered pure EVs for India and one among them is the Xcent Electric. That said, the Xcent Electric will not be the automaker’s first EV.
The carmaker will enter the EV segment with the Kona Electric. However, the regular Kona itself would not be a feasible product in terms of pricing and an EV variant of the same would make it even more expensive. For the company to fetch volumes it will need a budget EV and that is where the Xcent EV pitches in. Details about the Xcent EV are unknown at the moment. An electric compact sedan seems to be a viable option for automakers, Tata has an EV based on the Tigor, Hyundai is planning to develop the Xcent EV and soon other manufacturers with compact sedans may join the bandwagon.
Hyundai’s first EV is due sometime in 2019 and meanwhile, this year, the Elite i20 facelift, i20 Active facelift, Creta facelift and the upcoming compact car (Santro) will be launched in India.
