The utility vehicle segment is seeing tremendous growth in the Indian market. A segment which was started by Toyota more than a decade back with the Qualis, is now seen increased competition. Toyota has been dominating the MPV segment since the launch of the Innova in 2005. In the past few years, Mahindra launched the Xylo while GM launched the Chevrolet Tavera. Just recently Maruti Suzuki launched the Ertiga and Nissan is all set to launch the Evalia on 25th September. Clearly the UV segment has a lot of potential and more and more manufactures plan to enter it.
Hyundai has been successful in almost all the segments it has entered, right from the entry level Eon to the full sized SUV, Santa Fe. It is only the UV segment it has not entered yet but things are set to change soon. The Korean automaker is working on a new UV platform, which is being developed for emerging markets like India. This new platform will form the base for a MPV and compact SUV in the near future. Hyundai is already studying the UV segment keenly and will soon announce its plans regarding the same.
Hyundai had showcased the HND-7 concept at the 2012 Auto Expo. This 7-seater MPV is powered by compact engines to offer good mileage. Also known as the Hexa Space, the concept MPV is high on space and practicality. India’s second largest car maker hasn’t commented on the launch of this vehicle yet but could bring it to the market in the later half of 2013. The company could plonk in the Verna’s 1.4-litre diesel engine and price the Hexa Space between Rs. 9-12 lakhs. It could be a fitting competitor to the segment leader, the Toyota Innova.
