The USA-spec Hyundai Verna comes with a new petrol engine offered with a CVT.
The Hyundai Verna (known as Accent in the USA) gets a new 1.6-litre SmartStream engine with Dual Continuously Variable Valve timing (D-CVVT) in the USA market. This engine will replace the current 1.6-litre GDI 4-cylinder gasoline engine and will be available with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox or with an optional 6-step CVT.
The SmartStream engine features dual port injection, a thermal management module and a high-energy ignition coil along with an external exhaust recovery system and a narrow water jacket core. This new engine will not only have cleaner emissions but will also be more fuel efficient than its predecessor. Hyundai has claimed a combined fuel economy of 15.3 km/l for this SmartStream engine whereas the outgoing engine only returned 13.6 km/l.
On the downside though, the 1.6-litre SmartStream engine has an estimated output of 120 BHP and 153 Nm of torque, which is lesser than its predecessor, which produced 130 BHP and 161 Nm of torque.
It is expected that Hyundai will not make any major changes to the equipment list, which means that the entry level Accent SE will come with air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and auto locking doors. Other standard features may include remote keyless entry, a 4-speaker audio system with a 5-inch infotainment system.
In India, Hyundai is likely to update the Verna by next year. The current Verna is available with three engine options – a 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine, a 1.6-litre CRDI diesel engine and a 1.6-litre VTVT petrol engine. Hyundai is going to offer the 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines from the Kia Seltos and these will be BS6 compliant.
