Hyundai Showcases New 1.0L, 1.4L Turbo Petrol Engines & 7-Speed DCT

The new 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine from the Kappa family powers the 2015 i20 and will be available from next year. It is Hyundai’s answer to compact petrol powered mills.

The new turbo engines come from the Kappa family and get a host of technology

Showcasing turbo power at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Hyundai Motor has introduced the line of small capacity turbocharged petrol engines and the all-new 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission that will power a range of models in the South Korean automaker’s portfolio, starting next year. The first engine in question is the 1.0-litre T-GDI 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol motor from the Kappa family and will power the 2015 i20 (Elite i20 in India) that also made its debut at the Paris Motor Show last week. The second engine is the 1.4-litre T-GDI 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit that was showcased on the i30 CNG concept car.

Hyundai states that the new engines are a part of the Kappa family and feature gasoline injection and single-scroll turbochargers. Developed at Hyundai’s technical centre in Russelheim, Germany, the engines comes packed with an electronically-controlled waste-gates and a six-hole GDI injector that helps improve low-end torque and throttle response as well as provide higher fuel efficency and lower emissions to meet Euro 6 emission standards.

Based on the 998cc Kappa petrol engine, the the new 1.0-litre T-GDI unit makes 120 PS of power and 172 Nm of torque, while the 1.4-litre T-GDI motor produces 117 PS of power and 206 Nm of torque in CNG mode. The new automatic 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) on the other hand uses an electrically driven actuator for the two dry clutches and an external damper to reduce NVH levels, and helps provide better fuel economy as well as smooth power delivery. The new 1.0-litre turbo petrol would be a good option for India for a performance variant of the Elite i20 to take on the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI.
