We have heard this before and we hear it again. Another strike has practically shut operations at the Hyundai plant at Chennai. With all the shifts canceled, production is hit at a time where Hyundai faces the heat from the Ford Figo. Workers went on strike after the Hyundai management suspended a few workers. The situation went to the level that the labour commissioner had to intervene to sort things out.
Hyundai is the second largest manufacturer in India and the Chennai plant is the global production hub of small cars like the i10 and its elder sibling i20. On a daily basis 2200 cars are produced and exported to other countries. Lately Hyundai had moved part of their operations to their Turkey plant due to frequent labour problems they face. We don’t really remember such frequent labour issues with other brands such as Ford and BMW, both located in Chennai itself. Maybe its something to do with the Koreans.
