Hyundai will be launching the 2016 i20 in international markets with their new 1.0-litre turbocharged engine which will offer more power and fuel efficiency as compared to the current crop of engines.

The new 1.0-litre turbocharged engine will have more power and be more frugal as well

Hyundai will be giving the i20 hatchback the new 1.0-litre petrol engine which is slated to make its debut in the international markets next year. The new i20 will most likely be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The new unit is one of the two new engines that were revealed at last year’s Paris Motor Show, the other being the 1.4-litre engine. However, the disappointing update for us Indians is that this 1.0-litre turbocharged engine will not make it to our country anytime soon.

The 1.0-litre engine is a three-cylinder unit having a capacity of 998cc and is based on the company’s Kappa MPI engine. It has one small turbocharger with direct injection that can be tuned to churn out 118 BHP and 172.1 Nm of torque. In comparison, the current 1.0-litre unit that is retailed with the Grand i10 model is capable of generating 65 BHP. Hyundai will be giving the i20 this new engine mainly due to the fact that the vehicle is not only doing well in India, but it’s the company’s second best selling model in the UK as well. The new engine will only help the i20 hatchback further broaden its appeal and garner more sales.

The new force-fed motor will most likely be brought along with a mildly updated exterior design as test mules of the hatch were recently spotted with full body camouflage in the UK. Hyundai will not be giving the Elite i20 any updates on the visual front anytime soon but the Korean car maker should consider bringing the 1.0-litre turbocharged unit to India because rivals including the likes of Ford and Volkswagen already offer downsized engines. Even Maruti Suzuki will soon the joining the turbocharged bandwagon with the upcoming YRA hatchback.

The Elite i20 in India will not get the new engine in the near future
