Recipient of the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) as well as MotorBeam Car of the Year 2013, the Hyundai Grand i10 has managed to achieve yet another milestone of crossing the 1 lakh sales mark within just 10 months of launch, also making it the fastest car in the country to do so. The Grand i10, which made its debut in September 2013, made its way into India’s top 5 selling brands within the second month of launch. Available in both petrol and diesel engine options, the Hyundai Grand i10 is essentially the next generation i10 and is sold simultaneously with the old generation model in the country.
Powering the Grand i10 is the 1.2-litre Kappa 2 petrol motor that belts out 83 PS of power and 116 Nm of torque, paired to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Diesel power comes from the frugal 1.1-litre 3-cylinder U2 CRDi engine that produces 71 PS and 163 Nm of torque and is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel Grand i10 also made it to India’s top ten most fuel efficient vehicle list, returning a fuel economy of 24 km/l.
Hyundai has been averaging around 10,000 units of the Grand i10 every month in the country and have also been exporting the hatchback to international markets like Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay, Nepal, South Africa and the most recent being Indonesia from its Chennai based plant. Earlier this year, the South Korean manufacturer also launched the Xcent compact sedan based on the Grand i10, which has also been clocking in impressive numbers in its segment, courtesy of the frugal engine options and a plethora of features inside the cabin.
Hyundai has been one of the few automakers that have been consistently performing, despite the downward trend in the Indian automotive market. The company’s next major launch this year will be the next generation i20 that is frequently caught testing across the country. While Hyundai has not confirmed, the next gen i20 will be positioned as a premium hatchback above the current generation i20, and both the models could be sold simultaneously in the country.
