Honda sets sights on India’s EV future with a new production facility

Honda Motorcycles has unveiled its plans to establish a dedicated electric vehicle production facility in India, marking a significant step in the company’s electrification strategy. The factory is expected to be operational by 2028 and will cater not only to the domestic market but also to international markets, including South America.

The announcement comes shortly after the launch of Honda’s first all-electric two-wheelers in India—the Activa e and the QC1 electric scooters. The company is set to expand its EV portfolio further, with plans to introduce additional models featuring fixed battery configurations.

Expanding Charging Infrastructure

In addition to manufacturing electric two-wheelers, Honda has outlined its initiative to establish a robust EV charging network across India. Leveraging its extensive network of over 6000 dealerships, the company aims to enhance charging accessibility for EV users. This move aligns with its strategy to make electric mobility a viable alternative by keeping the total cost of ownership comparable to internal combustion engine models over three years.

New EV Offerings and Market Ambitions

Honda’s newly launched Activa e and QC1 are positioned as key entrants in the electric two-wheeler segment. The Activa e comes with two 1.5 kWh swappable battery packs, providing a combined range of 102 km, whereas the QC1 features a fixed 1.5 kWh battery, offering a claimed range of 80 km. The pricing for these models stands at Rs 1.17 lakh for the Activa e and Rs. 90,000 for the QC1.

Global Electrification Goals

Honda has set ambitious targets for its global EV expansion. The company aims to introduce 30 electric models worldwide by 2030 and achieve an annual sales volume of four million EV units. As of now, 13 of these models have already been launched across different markets. Honda’s long-term vision includes securing a 50 percent share of the global two-wheeler market, underlining its commitment to sustainability and innovation in electric mobility.

With these strategic moves, Honda is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s rapidly evolving EV sector while strengthening its presence in the global electric two-wheeler landscape.
