Honda Elevate based EV to get different design and nameplate
Honda Cars India has confirmed plans to introduce its first fully electric vehicle in 2026, based on the Elevate platform. This new EV will form part of a trio of electrified models slated for launch in 2026-27, which will include a mix of hybrids and full-electric vehicles. However, the upcoming EV will feature a distinct nameplate and design, marking a fresh chapter in Honda’s India strategy.
Honda’s Electrification Drive in India
The Elevate-based EV is part of Honda’s broader initiative to increase the ratio of electrified vehicles in its portfolio, aligning with the company’s global objectives. Internally referred to as the ACE (Asian Compact Electric) project, this compact electric SUV is expected to be a significant export product, with up to 70% of units being shipped to international markets, including Japan.
Honda’s move to introduce an EV reflects its strategic pivot towards electric mobility, a shift made more critical by impending regulatory norms. The implementation of CAFÉ 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations in 2027 is set to intensify the focus on electrified powertrains, making EVs a cornerstone of Honda’s plans for India.
Growing Competition in the EV Segment
By the time Honda’s Elevate-based EV arrives, the Indian EV market is expected to be highly competitive. Domestic brands like Tata Motors, MG and Mahindra have already established a strong presence, while global players such as Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are gearing up to enter the mid-size EV SUV segment by 2025. Honda’s late entry could pose challenges but the company aims to leverage its reputation for reliability and engineering to make an impact.
Strong-Hybrid Technology Still Relevant
In addition to the EV, Honda plans to bolster its portfolio with more hybrid models. The company’s experience with the City Hybrid has provided valuable insights, even though the model did not achieve widespread acceptance. Honda sees strong-hybrid powertrains as particularly relevant for the Indian market in the short term, offering a balanced approach to efficiency and performance.
While Honda’s electrification strategy places greater emphasis on EVs, hybrids will remain a key component of its product line-up, catering to diverse consumer preferences and regulatory requirements.
Focus Shifts to SUVs
SUVs are set to dominate Honda’s future offerings in India. Recognising the growing preference for this body style, Honda aims to launch five SUV models by 2030, while continuing to update its sedan portfolio. The recent launch of the Elevate SUV has helped Honda re-enter the midsize SUV market but the company’s overall market share in India has declined in recent years, largely due to falling demand for sedans.
The delay in introducing more SUV models has been acknowledged by Honda’s leadership, who have assured that the brand’s upcoming launches will bring exciting new models and powertrains, starting from 2026.
Honda’s strategy for India is a mix of addressing current market dynamics and preparing for the future. The introduction of an Elevate-based EV, along with new hybrid models, signals a clear commitment to electrification. However, the brand faces tough competition and will need to deliver compelling products to regain its footing in the Indian market. By focusing on SUVs and leveraging its strengths in hybrid technology, Honda aims to navigate the challenges and position itself strongly in the evolving automotive landscape.
