Sports Utility Vehicles are the next big thing in the world. Every manufacturer is running to make one, be it Chevrolet or Lamborghini. However compact SUVs are becoming even more popular than traditional SUVs. Case in point is the Ford EcoSport, which even before launch has attracted a huge fan following. The Renault Duster on the other end has received 4000 bookings by the first day of launch. That is more than the combined sales of all Renault vehicles in India in a month put together. Naturally no manufacturer can afford to avoid the compact SUV segment.
Now news of Honda considering a compact SUV based on the Jazz platform have surfaced. This Honda Jazz SUV would rival the MINI Countryman and the Nissan Juke. There is no date of launch yet, nor has Honda revealed any of its plans. However the company is said to be very keen on developing an compact crossover based on the Jazz. Honda currently has no popular SUV globally except the CR-V and Pilot. The Jazz crossover has huge potential in increase Honda’s market share in various markets including India.
Honda will come up with the next generation Jazz in 2015. The company is expected to bring in the Jazz based SUV before that, if it happens. Other than Ford (EcoSport), Renault (Duster) and Chevrolet (Trax), other manufactuers are also said to be working on compact SUVs, including Fiat (500X) and Peugeot (2008). Renault’s next generation Modus dumps the current body style and will go the crossover way to. Competition is only going to get intense with Maruti Suzuki too working on a compact SUV, while Mahindra’s mini-Xylo is another such vehicle set for the global markets next year.
