Honda is likely to launch the new Civic here within the next one year.
The Honda Civic was the highest selling D-segment sedan during its time and the vehicle had a huge fan following. However, it was offered only with a petrol engine and when the market started shifting towards diesel engines, sales of the Civic started falling and Honda had to discontinue it in 2012.
The company is now looking to re-launch the car in the Indian market because preference for petrol cars is again increasing. The new Civic will be the same model that is sold in global markets. It will be slotted above the City and pricing will cross the Rs. 20 lakh mark. The new Civic will rival the Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla Altis and Skoda Octavia.
Honda has been struggling in India for more than a year now. The new Jazz and BR-V are fetching in so-so sales while the Brio has the least demand. Honda has just introduced the facelift of the City which is their best selling car in India. The company is now going to aim for premium segments again, targeting customers a bit different from Maruti and Hyundai.
Honda officials were recently quoted saying that they have a strategy to maintain their position with their premium offerings and focus less on the mass-market segments which are dominated by Maruti and Hyundai.
