The Honda Activa has a huge fan following in India and soon a more powerful version of this scooter will go on sale in the country. Honda will launch the Activa 125 in India in April, with deliveries commencing in June. First showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo, the Activa 125 has been widely anticipated and is Honda’s first 125cc scooter in the sub-continent. While the arrival of a 125cc scooter from Honda is good news for Activa loyalists, this spells bad news for Suzuki and Mahindra, as these manufacturers have been playing in the 125cc segment for quite sometime now with little competition.
Honda could have used a new name for its 125cc scooter but going by the popularity of the Activa, the name Activa 125 was wisely chosen. This scooter has quite a resemblance to the regular Activa but gets multiple changes for differentiation. The Honda Activa 125 is propelled by a 125cc, single-cylinder powerplant which generates 8.6 BHP and 10.12 Nm. Honda’s combi-braking system is offered as well with a 190 mm front disc being an option. The Activa finally gets telescopic forks at the front which should also make it to the 110cc version in the near future. The front tyre is 90/90/12 while the rear one is 90/90/10.
The Honda Activa 125 gets alloy wheels and a new instrument cluster with a digital display. This metal bodied scooter is sure to please the power hungry but given Hero MotoCorp’s drive to bring performance oriented scooters, Honda should now consider an Activa 150. The Hero Zir is confirmed for an India launch next year and will use a 150cc engine, belting out 14 BHP of power and 12.7 Nm of twisting force. Now that’s a scooter which can nudge past 100 km/hr without much effort. The Honda Activa 125 will compete with the Suzuki Swish and Piaggio Vespa LX in the domestic market. The expected price of the Activa 125 is Rs. 60,000/-.
