Honda 1.6-litre diesel engine to be made in India at the Tapukara plant, this oil burner will only be for exports.
You read it first on MotorBeam. Honda will be manufacturing a 1.6-litre diesel engine in India, and wait, before we start all the speculation whether this powerplant will make it to any of the Honda’s India line-up of cars, give me the privilege of breaking the ice for you, ‘this engine isn’t going to power any of the Honda’s India line-up of cars and this motor is only for export markets’.
Honda will be making this 1.6-litre diesel mill at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. Since this powertrain is only for export markets, starting with Thailand next month from where it will be exported to other markets like the Philippines. Expect the Civic, HR-V and CR-V to be powered by this engine in international markets.
Honda was in news for a similar reason when it showcased the 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine at the 2016 Auto Expo. Then too there were speculations that Honda would be using this 1.6-litre oil burner to power some of its cars in the line-up especially the CR-V and Accord.
Honda internationally too has a 1.6-litre diesel engine, but making it in India probably could be a cost-effective measure, and hence this move from the carmaker. The 1.6-litre and 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engines that Honda has internationally, could have been used to power the CR-V and Accord (which primarily sell in lower numbers due to lack of a diesel engine) in India, but owing to the poor fuel quality in India, Honda hasn’t been able to bring them to the aforementioned cars, or so we are made to believe.
